Jason Varitek Hopes to Join Dustin Pedroia in Successful Recovery from Broken Foot The Red Sox are getting closer to returning to full strength.

With Dustin Pedroia planning to return to the Red Sox from a broken foot on Tuesday, Jason Varitek hopes to make a similar comeback from the same injury within the next few weeks.

Varitek has been sidelined since July 1, but has been making great strides in his workouts, The Boston Globe reports.

"I’m still learning how to walk and jog right now," Varitek told the Globe earlier this week. "I’m recovering day to day, and getting better each day, so that’s good for me. Whatever we’re doing, I’m handling and not going backward the next day."

Varitek added that he ran for the first time on Saturday.

In other injury news, reliever Hideki Okajima began a throwing program in Toronto on Tuesday. Okajima was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday with a strained right hamstring.

"He's here, and he seems in good spirits," Terry Francona told MLB.com. "He will start the throwing program today. That's like the 60-90 feet [progression]. Depending on how he feels will determine how quickly he ramps up. I think he's in pretty good spirits, which means, normally, he feels pretty good."

Mike Cameron told the Globe on Sunday that his lower abdominal strain is feeling better.

"I think he felt a little optimistic from talking to him last night, which is good," Francona told the Globe.
