Jon Lester Withstands Texas Heat, Hot Bats to Earn Top Dawg of the Week Honors As if the Rangers’ lineup wasn’t difficult enough for an opposing pitcher to face, Jon Lester had to withstand the triple-digit Texas heat in addition to some nausea during his eight-inning gem on Saturday night in the Lone Star State.

But that wasn’t all Lester did last week, as the lefty held the reigning World Series champion Yankees scoreless for 6 1/3 innings on Monday afternoon in the Bronx. For his efforts, the southpaw has earned Jerry Remy‘s Top Dawg of the Week award.

In a contest in which first pitch was thrown in 102-degree heat, Lester threw 109 pitches in the 3-1 win over the Rangers. This performance was big for the staff as both Jonathan Papelbon and Daniel Bard were unavailable due to pitching during the extra-inning contest the night before.

On Monday, Lester allowed just four hits in the 2-1 win over the Yanks. He struck out six and walked three to preserve the series split with the first-place Yankees.

The back-to-back wins put a timely halt to an uncommon four-game losing streak for the tall lefty.

Throughout the week, fans picked Mike Lowell as their choice for Top Dawg.

Every Monday or Tuesday (depending on when the Red Sox series starts), NESN.com will release which Red Sox players are the Top Dawg contenders. The following Sunday, Jerry Remy will pick a Top Dawg of the Week.

But Jerry also wants to hear from you, Red Sox Nation, and find out who you think is the week’s Top Dawg for the Red Sox. Fans can vote for their Top Dawg of the Week. At the end of the week, we’ll see if Jerry’s Top Dawg matches up with Red Sox Nation’s Top Dawg.
