Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was removed from Friday night's game against the Rangers in Texas with what the team is calling pain in his left side.
He was lifted following the fourth inning in favor of Eric Patterson. Ellsbury was 0-for-3 at the time he was lifted from the game.
Ellsbury, who's missed 95 games this year due to broken ribs, got tangled up with Rangers starter Tommy Hunter in Ellsbury's first at-bat in the first inning. Ellsbury hit a weak grounder to the right side that Hunter took himself for the out before he and Ellsbury collided, resulting in Ellsbury falling to the ground just past first base.
