The Red Sox capped off another successful draft as they signed pitcher Anthony Ranaudo on Monday night shortly before the midnight deadline to sign draft picks.
The supplemental first-round pick's deal is reportedly worth $2.55 million according to WEEI.com
According to the report, the negotiations went right up to the final hour, something that should have been expected when considering the fact that Scott Boras is Ranaudo's agent.
Ranaudo was prepared to go back to LSU next season if a deal could not be reached. He was a supplemental round pick for the Red Sox after initial projections had him as a high first-rounder. Arm concerns and a lack of command this past season with the Tigers led some teams to back off of him. The fact that he had the ability to return to LSU likely scared some teams away as well.
The Sox took Ranaudo with the 39th pick of the draft. From there, the right-hander went to the Cape Cod League where he simply dominated, and, quite frankly, drove his price up even further.
Ranaudo left the Cape League in the middle of the season after posting a 3-0 record with 31 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings.
