Despite making about $3.4 million and averaging only 1.5 points in 9.1 minutes per game last season, Brian Scalabrine was still the fan favorite that he has been throughout his five-year stay in Boston.
Now, the lighthearted forward could be taking his services overseas if he doesn’t receive an NBA offer, The Boston Globe reports.
Scalabrine, who is an unrestricted free agent, reportedly wants to play in the NBA next season, but offers have been scarce thus far. He has averaged 3.3 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game in his career, primarily as a role player. The 32-year-old underwent surgery last month and is still in the rehab process, perhaps dropping his stock even further.
Scalabrine has made it clear, though, that he would love to return to the Celtics, although it is beginning to look more and more unlikely, given the amount of transactions made by the team as of late.
“Is [playing in Europe] what I want to do? No. I want to play for the Celtics,” he told the Globe. “I want to keep grinding out. I want to win another championship. I really want to see what Shaq’s like.”
Scalabrine recently joked about the similarities between him and Shaq and said that the Celtics could use both of them. Whether the two eventually team up or not, Scalabrine continues to help out in the Boston community by representing the Celtics in their Feed the Children program.
The 6-foot-9 forward has remained on an even keel, despite the lack of NBA offers. He said that if he needs to go to Europe and play, he will do so and welcome the opportunity for him and his children to learn a new culture.
