As has befallen the New England Patriots repeatedly, the Boston Bruins have now lost a player before the season has even begun.

Veteran center Trent Whitfield blew out his Achilles tendon this past week while exercising and will likely be out for the season, reports CSNNE.

Whitfield appeared in 16 games for the Bruins last season, notching one assist and a minus-2 plus-minus. He has 29 points in 193 career contests.

Whitfield was not expected to see ice time except as a reserve this coming season, but he did have 43 points for the Providence Bruins last season — serving as a valuable mentor for younger players in the organization.

With Tyler Seguin coming into the fold as a center, the injury's significance is not as great as it otherwise would have been.
