Catcher Kevin Cash was activated from the disabled list before the Red Sox' game against the Mariners on Tuesday and will replace fellow catcher Dusty Brown, who was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Cash was placed on the 15-day DL on Aug. 11 with a left hamstring strain. He played in a rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday and another with Single-A Lowell on Sunday before rejoining the club.

A fill-in for Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek for much of the season, the 32-year-old Cash has played in 20 games with the Boston since being acquired from Houston in a trade on July 1. He has hit .148 (8-for-54) with no homers and no RBIs.

In seven games over two stints with Boston this year, Brown has hit .250 (3-for-12). He had the club's only two RBIs in a 16-2 loss to Toronto on Friday night. He will return to Triple-A Pawtucket where he was batting .219 this summer.
