The sweepstakes for the Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez has reportedly begun.
The Chicago White Sox, who tried to acquire Ramirez at the trade deadline, will claim Ramirez off waivers, according to Ken Rosenthal. Having a .540 winning percentage, the lowest among the contending AL clubs, the Chi-Sox would have dibs on Ramirez — assuming no teams out of the playoff hunt try to acquire him.
General manager Kenny Williams is apparently "pushing in all of his chips," according to a major league source, to acquire the former Red Sox star.
The Tampa Bay Rays also expressed interest at the deadline, but their high winning percentage would put them toward the end of the line for a waiver claim.
Ramirez has $4.46 million left on his contract with Los Angeles, though $3.34 million of that total is deferred without interest.
Still, as the Dodgers have fallen out of contention, they likely will be willing to dump his salary.
