Mark Ingram will have to wait at least one week to begin the defense of his titles — both his Heisman Trophy and his national championship.
The Alabama running back underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday after suffering an injury late in Monday's practice, reports ESPN.com.
He has been ruled out for Saturday's opener at San Jose State, and he will likely be out for the Tide's second game, a home contest against the Penn State Nittany Lions.
"We will make every decision on the future based on what's best for Mark
and his career as we consult with Dr. [Lyle] Cain and Dr. [James]
Andrews on his progress," head coach Nick Saban said. "This is not an injury that will
affect Mark's future ability to make a full recovery in a relatively
short time."
Ingram ran for 1,658 yards and 20 touchdowns en route to a National Championship last year.
