Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education teacher, invented the game of basketball in 1891.
Naismith was looking to give students an indoor diversion during the cold New England winter, so he propped up a peach basket and grabbed a soccer ball. Before he knew it, he invented one of the world's most popular sports.
