Will Carlos Delgado Have Impact for Red Sox Down the Stretch? He hasn't seen a big league heater in over 18 months, but Carlos Delgado is doing everything he can to get game-ready and help out the Red Sox down the stretch.

The 38-year-old first baseman was signed over the weekend to help Mike Lowell fill the void which the injured Kevin Youkilis left at the bag. Lowell, although swinging a hot bat since being activated, appears to be unable to be an everyday player, meaning Delgado, a left-handed slugger, will most likely be seeing platoon duties with the right-handed hitting Lowell at first base upon return.

Delgado not only hasn't played since early last summer, he has undergone a pair of hip surgeries since. But don't write him off just yet. The 17-year vet has 473 taters and 1,512 RBIs to his name, and just two seasons ago with the Mets, he spanked 38 homers and drove in 115 while hitting .271 — his best season since 2005.
