Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz was named American League Pitcher of the Month for August, Major League Baseball announced Thursday.
Buchholz was 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA in six starts during the month. He had three consecutive starts without allowing an earned run and had a career-high scoreless streak of 26 2/3 innings.
For the month, the 26-year-old was second in the A.L. in wins and ERA and tied for third in innings pitched with 43 2/3. The effort leaves him with a major league-leading 2.21 ERA entering his scheduled start Friday at home against the Chicago White Sox.
Buchholz joins Jon Lester in receiving the honor in 2010. Lester won the award in May. It is the sixth time two Red Sox pitchers have earned the honor in the same season. Derek Lowe won it in April 2002 and Pedro Martinez three months later.
Toronto right fielder Jose Bautista was the player of the month after hitting 12 homers and driving in 24 runs in August.
