Peter Chiarelli Refutes Report That Marc Savard Could Miss Entire Season

Almost immediately after a report was released Tuesday night that said Marc Savard could miss the entire season, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli issued a statement refuting the claim.

"As I stated on Friday, Marc Savard is suffering from symptoms related to post-concussion syndrome," Chiarelli said in the statement. "He is under the care of our doctors. Any reports that suggest that there are any other issues regarding Marc, or him not playing for the Bruins this season, are completely inaccurate."

The report which Chiarelli references came from Joe McDonald of ESPN.com, who cited a team source that said Savard could miss the entire 2010-11 season but that there are still "many unknowns." That source went on to tell ESPN.com that the situation was "not good" and "complex."

Earlier on Tuesday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that Savard was recovering in Peterborough, Ontario, saying that Savard "was hit and hit hard by symptoms in August."

Savard's agent, Larry Kelly, later told McKenzie that "No one is in a position at this point in time to make a statement of that nature [that Savard may miss the entire season.] No one."

Savard suffered his concussion on March 7, taking a Matt Cooke elbow to the head in Pittsburgh. He felt strong enough to return to the team on May 1, scoring the game-winner in overtime of Game 1 of the conference semifinals. He played in all seven games that series, finishing with a goal, two assists and a plus-2 rating.

When the Bruins opened camp last week, however, Chiarelli announced that Savard would not be participating due to the symptoms.

"As I have previously stated, when there is a change in Marc's status, I will issue an update," Chiarelli said on Tuesday.
