The Yankees' second Javier Vazquez experiment seems poised to end much like the first one.
Vazquez, who hasn't gone more than five innings in any of his past five starts and sports an ERA of 5.09, will not make his next scheduled start, ESPN.com reports.
Due to the Yankees day off on Thursday, the team will pitch the rest of the rotation on normal rest.
Andy Pettitte is expected to make his return to the rotation this coming Sunday, though manager Joe Girardi wouldn't confirm such.
"It could line up that way," Girardi told ESPN. "Like I said, I'll announce it when I have it."
With Pettitte back in the fold, somebody would have to be on their way out, and that may be Vasquez.
Vazquez will be available out of the bullpen. It is unclear whether he, or Dustin Moseley — who has been good but not great as a fill-in — will finish the season as the team's fifth starter.
"I would love to find out, but I'll find out eventually," Vazquez said of the situation.
The Yankees travel to Tampa Bay for a pivotal series on Monday.
