The situation in New England, though, isn't totally the same as the Oakland scenario. Randy wanted out of Oakland. He wanted to be traded. On the other hand, he doesn't want out of New England. He just wants a contract.
It'd be easy to just give him one and shut him up, but would that actually be smart? Randy Moss is 33 years old, and will be well over 34 before the beginning of next season. While wide receivers can have longevity — look at Jerry Rice — Moss's success is largely based on his speed.
While Moss' size is also a large part of his game — and it isn't going anywhere, he has a frame that one would expect to become injury prone.
Giving him a long-term deal could be a gamble. Still, Moss is clearly among the five best receivers in the game, and he hasn't showed any sort of linear statistical decline with age.
If the Patriots wait the season out, though, they'll force Randy to play for his contract. That may bring out his best.
