The field of 12 drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Series is set, and it includes three Roush Fenway drivers.
Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle have now all secured spots in the Chase, thanks to Biffle’s 32nd place finish at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday.
Edwards and Kenseth had already secured Chase cup births by finishing second and 11th, respectively, in Atlanta on Sept. 5.
After finishing 36th in Atlanta, though, Biffle still had some work to do heading into Richmond. Although Biffle’s task at hand — avoid finishing dead last — was not a terribly difficult one.
Biffle’s spot in the Chase was secured when Jason Leffler dropped out of the race during Lap 48 due to brake problems. Once Leffler pulled out and Biffle automatically qualified, Clint Bowyer, Jamie McMurray and Ryan Newman were left to vie for the final spot in the 12-man field — a spot Bowyer would eventually earn.
Roush Fenway has now placed 20 cars in the Chase field- the most of any racing organization since the playoff system began in 2004.
Edwards, Kenseth, and Biffle will all race next in the Cup’s first playoff race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 19.
