Tim Wakefield Will Start Instead of Clay Buchholz in Tampa Series Finale Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced Tuesday night that knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will start on the mound rather than Clay Buchholz in the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.

The coaching staff was toying with the idea to send Buchholz to the mound one start earlier than normal if the Red Sox picked up the first two games of the series with the Rays. While all looked hopeful after Monday night's 12-5 victory, the Rays' offense exploded for a 14-5 win on Tuesday, bringing about Francona's announcement.

"Our pitchers all kind of knew where we stood," Francona said during the postgame interview. "Buch was great about everything, he really wanted the chance to pitch. If we'd have won tonight we would have pitched him tomorrow."

Buchholz will get his scheduled start on Friday in the series opener in Oakland against Trevor Cahill. Right-hander John Lackey will start for Boston on Saturday.
