Javier Vazquez has recovered from his "dead arm" and is now back in the Yankees rotation. Far more significant help may also be on the way back.

On Saturday morning at Yankee Stadium, Andy Pettitte took the mound, facing none other than Alex Rodriguez at the plate in a simulation, ESPN.com reports.

Rodriguez also took grounders and batting practice. He looks posed to return to the Yankees lineup on Sunday after being on the 15-day DL since Aug. 21.

"We'll see how he feels [Sunday] morning and then make our decision," Joe Girardi said.

"I felt good," Rodriguez said. "[Pettitte] looked great. I'm glad I don't have to face him every day."

Pettitte's return may be a little farther off, but he is definitely on his way.

"It is a step in the right direction," he said.

His target date for returning is Sept. 13.
