Harvard Turns Back Dartmouth, 30-14 in Ivy League Showdown

Analysis: Harvard was simply the much better team on Saturday. They made no mistakes, were able to move the ball at will and were able to score when given the chance.

Dartmouth often moved the ball well via Schwieger and Kempe, but Kempe's mistakes were the real difference. They both killed Dartmouth drives at inopportune times and put bonus points on the board for the Crimson.

Final, Crimson 30-14: Scales runs on first down for eight, before being shaken up and leaving the game. Harvard picks up the first down thereafter, and it is time for the victory formation.

Fourth quarter, 2:30, Crimson 30-14: Fourth down for Dartmouth comes to no avail — Kempe incomplete after a Harvard blitz.

Harvard ball, and they need just one first down.

Fourth quarter, 2:56, Crimson 30-14: Nick Schwieger appears done for the day, sitting with his shoes off on the sidelines.

Kempe throws incomplete on first down, but completes his second down attempt over the middle to Scott for a first down at the Harvard 48.

Kempe throws deep incomplete on first down, but completes shallow on second down via play action to Barbaro for a first to the 32.

Kempe is sacked from behind on the subsequent first down for a loss of six to the Harvard 38, and he scrambles for no gain on second down. Third down is nearly intercepted, and Kempe converts fourth and 17 on a long play action completion to Reilly.

McManus then makes a catch all the way at the seven yardline — quick across the middle. Kempe throws incomplete on second down, bringing up third and 2. The third down play is broken but results in just an incompletion. Timeout Dartmouth.

Fourth quarter, 7:30, Crimson 30-14: Harvard takes a timeout, and Dartmouth deposits the kickoff into the endzone for a touchback thereafter.

Scales takes it up the middle for eight on first down. He goes again on second and gains only one, but again gets the call on third down and converts with five more.

Zajeski gains three on the ground on the new first down, bringing it up to the 36. Winters next throws to the sideline incomplete, so third and long. Jakeski comes close to the yardage on third down, but he is a yard or so short.

Harvard punts to the 19 — out of bounds.

Fourth quarter, 10:46, Crimson 30-14: Kempe to Reilly way across the field down to the Harvard 30 on a bomb.

Kempe finds McManus for nine more, again bringing Dartmouth near the Harvard redzone. With Schwieger out, Pierre picks up another first down, and then brings it for five down to the 13 on first down. On second, Kempe is sacked immediately off the snap on a blown play action fake.

On third down, Kempe converts the first down to the five yardline to Scott.

On first and goal, Reilly drops a sure touchdown catch in the endzone — right off his chest. Pierre hurdles over defenders and carries it into the endzone for a Dartmouth TOUCHDOWN. 30-14.

Fourth quarter, 14:20, Crimson 30-7: Scales takes first down for a first down to the harvard 37. He gets the ball again for a gain of six and then couple. Dartmouth comes up with a stop on third down on the ground, forcing Harvard to punt.

Third quarter, 1:00 , Crimson 30-7: Dartmouth returns kickoff to the 29. Schwieger runs for nine on first down to 38. Schwieger picks up the first down on second down to the 41.

Schwieger gets it again, for two more on first down. Kempe connects across the field to McManus to the Harvard 30.

Dartmouth stuffed for no gain on first down. Schwieger gets around the corner on the second after a gain of six, but he is down with an injury. He is carried off the field, but is able to walk himself.

Kempe is stuffed on the option run on third down. Timeout Dartmouth.

Field goal no good. Harvard Ball.

Third quarter, 5:32 , Crimson 30-7: Winters passes to Ross on first down, and he goes down the right sidelines for 66 yards — all the way to the 22 yardline of Dartmouth.

Winters runs for a yard on first and 5 after an offsides call. He takes it himself on second down and picks up the first, but holding backs the Crimson up to second and 11.

Big Green get the stop and hold Harvard to a Mothander field goal attempt – GOOD from 35. 30-7.

Third quarter, 7:30 , Crimson 27-7: McManus catches ball deep to the right on great diving catch. First down at Harvard 47, Schwieger takes the ball for 10 to the 37.

Kempe passes for five yards to Reilly On second down, Kempe goes deep to the endzone, but it is broken up at the last instant. Schwieger picks up a big third down on the ground down towards the 20.

Schwieger takes first down to the 17 yardline. Kempe nearly throws an interception on second down and is sacked on third down. Dartmouth goes for fourth and 17, but Kempe is picked off. Schneider with the pick, back to his 17.

Third quarter, 10:58, Crimson 27-7: Dartmouth returns the favor with an interception of their own two plays later, but the pick is called off for an illegal substitution flag — Harvard ball still. Gordon loses one on the new first down, second and 11.

Winters throws incomplete on second down. On third down, Winters is sacked after trying to step up into the pocket. The coverage broke down after receivers were covered well.

Harvard punt goes into the endzone.

Third quarter, 12:58, Crimson 27-7: Dartmouth takes kickoff to 26. Schwieger gains nine to the 35 on first down, second and 1. He picks up the first on forward progress thereafter.

Kempe keeps an option for two yards on first down. On second, he throws deep over the middle and is picked off. Harvard ball.

Half Time, Crimson 27-7: Loss of two on first down. Chrississ catches the pass on second but trips at the 10. QB Draw on third down but to no avail. They call timeout with just seconds left so as to attempt the field goal.

Mothander field goal is good. 27-7 at half time.

Second quarter, 0:47, Crimson 24-7: Harvard returns kickoff to own 47. Gordon catches pass for two yards on first down. The pass is completed to Chrississ on second down for a first. Winters continues to move the ball with another two passes. Harvard calls timeout with 1:11 remaining at the 22. Winters incomplete, but completes to the 10 yard line on second.

Second quarter, 2:25, Crimson 24-7: Harvard fair catch at their own 12. Gordon rushes for a first down.

Winters incomplete on first down after the big gain. On second, Winters is sacked back at his own 28. The third down completion is short and Harvard is forced to punt.

The punt is returned by Dartmouth for a TOUCHDOWN — #8 Abuhoff. 24-7

Second quarter, 4:34, Crimson 24-0: Harvard kick returned by Dartmouth to the 40 after a facemask penalty.

Kempe pass completed for a yard to the right. On second down, Kempe gets hit during his release — incomplete.

Third down fails as Kempe overthrows McManus.

Second quarter, 5:25, Crimson 24-0: Gordon takes the ball down to the 14 on two rushes. Winters throws an incomplete pass, second and 10. Scales takes the carry for a gain of four.

Winters passes complete TOUCHDOWN over the middle to Chrississ.

Second quarter, 7:05, Crimson 17-0: Dartmouth into Harvard territory as Kempe goes for 10 yards on an option.

Schwieger gains a couple thereafter, second and 8 on the 40. Kempe throws an incomplete swing pass. Timeout Dartmouth.

Kempe intercepted by #52 Josh Boyd over the middle. Boyd returns the ball all the way to the 25 of Dartmouth.

Second quarter, 8:20, Crimson 17-0: Harvard 43-yard field goal is GOOD, and Harvard keeps it despite a running into the kicker flag.

Kempe completes first down to the tight end for a gain of nine to the 29. First down is converted on the ground — their third of the game. Schwieger thereafter runs for eight — called back for holding.

McManus runs from a direct snap, and then Schwieger runs to the left for a first down.

Schwieger runs to about midfield on first down.

Second quarter, 11:40, Crimson 14-0: Goron rushes for minimal gain on first, but gains four on second down. Scales again rushes well, getting the first down on the ground despite the third and long.

On first down, Harvard does a trick play — Winters flips to Cook who goes deep and converts at the Dartmouth 25. Gordon is stuffed on second after a minimally successful first, setting up third and long. Winters throws incomplete.

Second quarter, 14:30, Crimson 14-0: Dartmouth takes kickoff to the 32. Rush for nine yards on first down. Successful conversion on second down. Kempe incompletion leads to a Dartmouth punt — fair caught by the Crimson at their own 12.

First quarter, 1:40, Crimson 14-0: Gordon rushes it down to the five yardline on second down. Winters takes it himself on third down around the corner and into the endzone for a second rushing TOUCHDOWN.

First quarter, 2:15, Crimson 7-0: Gordon brings it for third and 2 at the Dartmouth 25. Gordon runs wide and finds the first down marker.

Scales receives a screen pass for nine, down to the 15. The Crimson thereafter convert the first down on a short completion by Winters.

First quarter, 4:44, Crimson 7-0: Winters deep ball broken up by Dartmouth. Gordon picks up two on second down. Third down incomplete, but a flag is down — offside by Dartmouth, so third down will be repeated. Winters completes the pass for a first down, seven yards.

Scales rushes for seven yards to about midfield.  Next rush is short, leaving third and inches. Scales breaks through on third, down to the Dartmouth 33.

First quarter, 7:10, Crimson 7-0: Winters completes to Brown for seven on first. Gordon is stopped for no gain on second down. Gordon, though, gets five on third down.

First quarter, 8:10, Crimson 7-0: Harvard kicks off to the Big Green, returned to the 35 yardline. Dartmouth opens up with play action, Kempe completes for six yards. On second down, McManus takes it from the wildcat up the middle to the Harvard 38. Harvard comes up with two big stops thereafter, backing Dartmouth up to a 3rd and 13. Kempe's third down attempt is incomplete deep down the middle. Punt to the the Harvard 13.

First quarter, 10:08, Crimson 7-0: Mike Cook reception down to the one yardline. Gino Gordon is stuffed on first and goal. TOUCHDOWN. Collier Winters rolls out for the score. Harvard had little to no trouble moving the ball on their opening drive. 

First quarter, 11:10, 0-0: First down converted on QB keeper. Pass broken up on first, and a screen pass on second is complete for a first down. Next, Kyle Juszczyk catches a pass, and Gino Gordon takes a carry for a first down. Harvard on the Dartmouth 23. 

First quarter, 13:10, 0-0: Harvard begins on offense and gets an easy first down on the ground with Gordon. Scales takes a run for eight yards thereafter, then an incomplete pass.

1:30 p.m.: Nearly time for kickoff.

8 a.m.: The Harvard Crimson will head onto Memorial Field in Hanover, N.H. this afternoon to face Dartmouth in the Big Green's homecoming game.

Both teams have a 4-2 overall record, though the Crimson are 2-1 in the Ivy League, while the Big Green are 1-2.

Each of Dartmouth's three contests in conference have been very close, with the Big Green beating Columbia 24-21, losing to Yale 23-20 and falling to Penn in overtime 35-28. Harvard's Ivy contests have not been so even. Each of their games, both wins and losses, have come by at least 10 point margins.

With four games to go, the conference title remains completely up for grabs.

Kickoff will occur at 1:30 p.m..
