Not so fast.
The Leafs have since dropped three straight (one in overtime) heading into a busy week with games against the Panthers, Bruins and Rangers. If the streak continues, the Leafs could be looking at a 4-6-1 start, and all that playoff talk might seem a bit silly.
Of course, from a Bruins perspective, the Leafs had better not become a playoff team, as the B’s own the Leafs’ first-round pick.
Then again, the B’s already landed Tyler Seguin and Jared Knight thanks to the Leafs, so maybe they won’t be too greedy.
The B’s will do their part to hurt Toronto’s record on Thursday night, when Kessel and the Leafs visit the TD Garden for the first time of the season. Last year, the Bruins went 4-1-1 against Toronto, contributing to the Leafs’ second-worst record in the NHL and thereby handing Seguin over to the Bruins.
This year, Bruins fans will once again root hard against the Leafs night in and night out. That will be difficult if, as NESN’s own Jack Edwards suggested, the Leafs have turned the corner and will play through April.
