Brandon Meriweather didn't mean for Todd Heap to get injured on Sunday, but despite that, the safety plans to keep playing the game the only way he knows how.
Meriweather was a guest on WEEI's Dale and Holley Show on Monday and he discussed his controversial hit on the Ravens' tight end in Sunday's matchup. The hit was deemed to be a personal foul in a game that the Patriots eventually went on to win, 23-20 in overtime.
"I just attacked," he said of the hit on his weekly radio spot. "I wasn't trying to hit head-to-head contact or injure anybody or play dirty in any kind of way. It just happened."
Meriweather could be seen talking to head coach Bill Belichick on the sidelines following the play and ended up missing a few plays presumably as a result of the penalty.
The safety's hit on Heap was one of a handful of controversial hits that left various players across the league with head injuries as a result. The NFL said on Monday that they would look into suspensions for some of those players engaging in head-to-head tackles.
Despite that, Meriweather insisted on Monday morning that the penalty on Sunday or even league discipline won't change his style of play.
"I'm going to be aggressive, point blank," he explained. "I won't change my game, period. I'm sorry it happened. Heap is actually a real good friend of mine. I talked to him yesterday and let him know it wasn't intentional and he told me he understood."
Patriots defensive tackle and captain Vince Wilfork went as far to say that the hit may have actually given the Patriots some extra motivation on Sunday as well.
