Special teams is the part of football that is all too often overlooked. When your team allows a blocked punt, blocked field goal and kickoff return for a touchdown, it's too hard to ignore.
The Dolphins faced that fate Tuesday morning, and it didn't take long for the team to fire special teams coordinator John Bonamego. The team made the announcement Tuesday morning, via Twitter.
Bonamego was in his third year as the special teams coordinator for the Dolphins, and he served in the same role for the Saints for the two years previous. The Dolphin's website praised Bonamego's work with his units, as he was credited for helping kick returner Ted Ginn, punter Brandon Fields and kicker Dan Carpenter set records and receive accolades under his tutelage.
However, after losing 41-14 on Monday night to the Patriots in a game that the Dolphins were expected to win, something had to be done.
Head coach Tony Sparano was not too excited to discuss the special teams breakdowns following the game. When asked if the issues were a result of execution or coaching, Sparano responded gruffly, "Next question."
In the NFL, when your job is to control the special teams and your special teams is a disaster, you tend to get fired. Chances are, Bonamego understands that much. But the fact that it was announced via Twitter? Ouch. That part must really sting.
