In this case, the gullible person was ESPN reporter Elizabeth Moreau, and the not-so-nice person was a man who called her when she was in her hotel room … and told her that her hotel was on fire.
The Smoking Gun obtained the Florida police report, in which the man told Moreau that she needed to lay down towels at her door to prevent smoke from getting into the room. He then told her to smash her window open.
"She then went to the window and used it to break out the window," the police report said.
Moreau told police that the caller told her, "that's what she gets for being a bad ex-wife" before insulting her with a crude comment.
The police report can be found here, but as a warning, it contains some colorful language.
The hotel told police that it does not have caller ID and has no way to track the incoming number.
Moreau, 27, works for ESPNU, and she was in Florida to cover a volleyball match.
Speculation has begun on the Internet that a group known as Pranknet may have been the culprit, as it has pulled similar actions as pranks in the past.
