The Astros aren’t putting out the welcome mat for Roger Clemens anytime soon.
Astros owner Drayton McLane told the New York Daily News that Clemens will not be involved with the team, at least until after Clemens’ perjury trial has been resolved.
Clemens has a 10-year personal services contract with the Astros and in the past had helped the team during spring training. With his perjury trial set for next April, Clemens will not be at spring training next year.
"We're just waiting to see what all revolves around Roger, and what the next step is in his career and his life," McLane told the newspaper. "I think everybody's just on hold until they see where he is with the government. He doesn't get involved in any way in our spring training or when he goes to where [his son] Koby is on one of our minor league teams. He doesn't get involved in the activities of the team. He's strictly a parent and a spectator."
The Rocket played for the Astros from 2004-06, compiling a 38-13 record and 2.40 ERA and pitching in eight postseason games.
Clemens was indicted by a federal grand jury in August for comments he made before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in February 2008.
Clemens told the committee that he had never used steroids, which went against testimony by his former personal trainer, Brian McNamee.
Clemens could face 15-21 months in prison.
