If you really want to read between the lines, it sounds like Jason Varitek is accepting that he may have to move on from the Boston Red Sox. Then again, it could have just been a slip of the tongue.

Varitek referred to the Red Sox as “that organization” in an interview with ESPN.com on Wednesday.

The free-agent catcher apparently mentioned the Red Sox as “that organization” when talking about the Red Sox in relation to the recent hiring of ex-pitching coach John Farrell as new manager of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Naturally, Varitek was pressed further about his reference.

“I did [say it],” Varitek said when asked about what he essentially called a verbal slip-up. “I messed up. Sometimes stuff flies out of my mouth and I can’t stop it. It happens once in a while. I didn’t pick up on it until after it came out.”

Varitek declined to comment on his free agency and said there was nothing to report in terms of a contract extension.
