Matt Cassel is a financial genius, and he’s passing his wisdom down to teenagers.
Despite never starting a game at quarterback in college or in his first three years in the NFL, Cassel parlayed a successful 2008 campaign with the Patriots into a six-year, $62.7 million dollar deal with the Chiefs that earns him only slightly less than Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers. Cassel actually earns a tad more than Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees.
Since Cassel now has a lot of money to handle, he's a good choice to represent the Chiefs by teaming up with Visa and Kansas Treasurer Dennis McKinney to teach kids money management skills, according to the Kansas City Star.
The program encourages middle school and high school kids to play an online game, "Financial Football," that helps kids practice fiscal responsibility while playing a football game that looks like a poor man's version of Tecmo Super Bowl.
Despite the outdated graphics, Cassel's efforts are commendable. Too many people fall into bad credit, so it's smart to teach kids early. The program is part of a national campaign by Visa and the NFL, and Kansas is now the 29th state to join the effort.
