Danroy Henry was just sitting in his car in a fire lane outside of Finnegan's Grill in Thornwood, New York a little after 1 a.m. Sunday morning following a rumble at the bar. Then, things escalated quickly.
Police officer Aaron Hess approached the silver Nissan and knocked on the window, at which point Henry stepped on the gas and knocked Hess onto the hood of the vehicle, The New York Daily News reports.
Hess clung to the vehicle and began firing shots through the windshield while Henry drove the Nissan towards another officer, Ronald Beckley, who also fired shots.
Henry was killed by the shots, the first time in the history of the Mount Pleasant Police had killed anyone. It was also the first time the force had used a firearm since a 1988 robbery.
There were two passengers in the car, one of whom was wounded by the gunshots. Henry, a North Easton, Mass. native, played defensive back for Pace University's football team.
"This is going to be a long, hard investigation and we will be as thorough as possible we want to identify exactly what happened and why it happened," Police Chief Louis Alagno said.
Neither Henry nor the passengers were reportedly a part of the incident at the bar. He was 20-years old.
