What do we really know about Monday night’s break out star Patrick Chung?
He played his college ball at the University of Oregon and was drafted by the Patriots in the second round of the 2009 draft. His mother was also a Jamaican reggae star in the 1980s.
While this may surprise some, it helps explain his poise under the lights. Sophia George experienced international success in the ’80s, especially when she released the song “Girlie Girlie.” The song went to No. 1 in Jamaica and top-10 in the UK. Some of her other hits include “Lazy Body,” “It Burn Mi Belly,” and the duet “Ain’t No Meaning.” All of these songs appeared on her 10-song album from 1986, “Fresh.”
Sophia told The Boston Globe after Chung was drafted that Patrick never got to see her perform, as he was born two years after her biggest hit, but he has listened to a few songs.
“I think he looks at me as his mom, not this reggae singer,” she told the Globe. “There are times in the house that sometimes the kids play my songs. They have it on the computer. He has some of it on his iPod.”
His father, Ronald Chung, is no slouch either. He was a music producer in Jamaica in the ’80s and actually managed his wife.
According to the Boston Globe, Sophia and Ronald are no longer in the music business. Now, Sophia works for a medical management company doing background checks on doctors and Ronald is a real estate document courier.
Chung made a name for himself on Monday night against the Dolphins when he recorded a blocked punt and a blocked a field goal, returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown and had four tackles. It was the second straight game in which the safety grabbed an interception, and he now has more solo tackles (28) than he did all of last year.
Chung and the Patriots will have a bye this week and will look to build on the strong special teams effort against the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 17.
