The Patriots' ugly ground game on Sunday in San Diego didn't go unnoticed by the fans and media and certainly didn't get overlooked by the front office.

On Tuesday, the Pats worked out running backs James Johnson and Javarris Williams, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Johnson, a Kansas State alum, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Bengals in 2008. After spending the majority of his first season on the practice squad, he was signed to the active roster and played in the final four games of the regular season.

The 24-year-old Williams was a seventh-round draft choice of the Chiefs in 2009 and was a practice-squad member for the first 12 weeks of the season before being promoted to the active roster for the remainder of the campaign.

Williams has six yards on six career carries, while Johnson has 29 yards on 12 carries and 47 receiving yards on six catches.

Neither player was signed after the workout, according to Reiss. The team is down a running back after waiving Thomas Clayton to make room for safety Sergio Brown.
