Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel, two guys that have shown for years that they probably shouldn't have the jobs that they have, will soon be looking for jobs.
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Mets won't have the general manager or manager back in their roles for the 2011 season. The report does leave open the possibility that Minaya could take a different role in the organization.
The Mets hold an option on Manuel, but the report says the team will not exercise it.
Manuel took over as manager in 2008, when the team fired Willie Randolph, leading the Mets to a 55-38 record down the stretch but failing to get them into the playoffs. In the nearly two full seaons since, the Mets are 147-174, despite having one of the highest payrolls in baseball.
That's where Minaya comes into play. The former Expos GM took over in Queens in 2005, and his biggest and best acquisition was without question Johan Santana. One great pitcher has proven to not be enough for the Mets, as the signings of the likes of Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo will likely be his legacy in New York.
The Mets close out their season with a three-game set against the Nationals this weekend.
After that, Joe Torre might want to keep his phone nearby.
