The Red Sox search for a new pitching coach may begin with former Oakland Athletics' pitching coach Curt Young, according to published reports.
ESPN's Buster Olney reported Monday that Young, who recently turned down a two-year extension offer with the A's, may be the first to interview with Boston to replace John Farrell.
Team sources have indicated to others that Young will speak with Red Sox executives as early as Tuesday, and Olney said that Young has already told some people that he will take the position in Boston.
Oakland released a statement saying that Young declined its offer in order "to pursue another opportunity within Major League Baseball."
Farrell was named the new manager in Toronto on Monday. He had been the Red Sox' pitching coach since 2007.
Young, 50, spent seven seasons as the A's pitching coach. A youthful group of Oakland pitchers led the American League with a 3.56 ERA in 2010.
As a player Young spent 10 of his 11 years with Oakland, winning a World Series in 1989. He was a coach in the A's minor league system when Terry Francona was a bench coach for the big club.
