Tim Brewster had been on the coaching hot seat all season at University of Minnesota. Now, after going 1-6 — with only a win over Middle Tennessee and no wins in the Big Ten — Brewster is out in the North Star State.
In truth, this has been a long time coming. Brewster was just 15-30 in his time with the Gophers, including a winless mark in the team's rivalry games against Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin.
"While I appreciate the passion and commitment that coach Brewster has shown, it is clear that a change in the leadership of Gopher football is necessary," athletic director Joel Maturi said in the school's statement. "We have high aspirations for our football program and we are not satisfied with its current direction. The results so far this season have been unacceptable and the program has simply not shown enough improvement over the past three and a half years to continue with the status quo."
Brewster will be replaced by offensive coordinator Jeff Horton, effective immediately. The team faces Penn State next Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Horton previously was head coach at University of Nevada and UNLV before a stint in the NFL.
Brewster will receive a $600,000 buyout.
