Rex Ryan Still Believes Darrelle Revis Was 2009’s Defensive Player of the Year

Rex Ryan is an opposing coach's dream. Off the field, that is.

On the field, Ryan commands one of the fiercest defenses in the NFL; off the field he possesses one of the biggest mouths in the NFL.

The Jets are preparing to face the Packers this weekend and Ryan still hasn’t gotten over the fact that Darrelle Revis didn’t win the Defensive Player of the Year award for 2009. That honor went to Green Bay's Charles Woodson.

"I know [Woodson is] a great player, but the year that Darrelle Revis had has never been done in the history of the league, and I think that was a once-in-a-lifetime year for any corner,” Ryan said in a conference call, according to the New York Post.

While he said he respects Woodson, enough to admit that he had an incredible year, Ryan still believes his guy got snubbed.

"Charles had an unbelievable year. You look at him statistically, it was a phenomenal year,” said Ryan. “As much as I respect Charles Woodson, I just thought the year Darrelle Revis had, I'd never seen anything like it, and I've only been around football all my life."

Revis, a trash talker himself, has let last year go. He actually used to look up to Woodson before he broke into the NFL himself and credits Woodson for establishing the aggressive-style cornerback.

"I have no control over Charles Woodson winning the defensive award last year," he said, according to the Post. "I look up to the guy. That's a guy that you always wanted to be like — be like Charles Woodson and cover like he does. I appreciate everything he did to pave the way for corners to try to play aggressive football like him."

The Jets will face the Packers at the New Meadowlands Stadium this Sunday.
