Apparently the hockey genes didn't run in the Gretzky family.
But thankfully there's baseball to fall back on.
Trevor Gretzky, son of hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky, has committed to play baseball at San Diego State, where he will play under Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, according to The Associated Press.
The first baseman hit .341 with two home runs and 33 RBIs last spring as a junior at Westlake Village Oaks Christian High. He also played football at Westlake Village, where last season one of his teammates was Nate Montana, the son of Football Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana. Nate now plays at his father's alma mater, Notre Dame.
Gwynn, who played 20 seasons for the Padres before retiring after the 2001 season, has been coaching at SDSU since July of 2002. He coached Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg from 2008-09. He revealed that he has cancer in a salivary gland but will continue coaching after undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.
