One thing, though, that may be getting overlooked by fans is the early play of Michael Ryder. Through six games, the 30-year-old has four points on a pair of goals and a pair of assists. The numbers are nowhere near the top of the league, but it’s a promising start for a guy who has struggled to find consistency.
Before getting too excited about the hot start, Bruins fans must consider this: Last season, Ryder had five points through six games. A goal on Oct. 21 against Nashville gave him seven through eight. From there, though, Ryder went 10 straight games without registering a single point.
It’s been a hallmark of Ryder’s career. He scores in bunches, but when he’s not scoring, his droughts last seemingly forever. It seems that this season, however, Ryder could end up benefiting from a new linemate in Seguin. With the play-making Seguin at his side, Ryder has at least temporarily re-found his devastating shot. Playing with Mark Recchi isn’t hurting Ryder, either.
Perhaps the strongest case for a big year from Ryder may come off of the ice. Many were calling for the Bruins to make a move that would send Ryder and his $4 million salary to Providence to clear cap space. His name has been floated around in trade rumors. Uncertainty has followed Ryder through the offseason and it looks like he could be using it as motivation.
In addition to any motivation he’s taking from off-ice whispers and rumors, Ryder is also in a contract season. At 30, he may be in line for one more decent contract and being able to silence the critics who say he can’t score consistently, might get him that contract.
If the Bruins are to truly rebound from last season’s offensive woes, they’ll likely need a strong season, all season, from Michael Ryder.
