With Patrice Bergeron Signed, Which Boston Athlete Should Get Next Contract Extension? Patrice Bergeron isn’t the flashiest player, but in many ways, he is the heart and soul of the Boston Bruins.

That’s why it was good news on Thursday to see that the Black and Gold have signed Bergeron to a three-year extension, keeping him with the Bruins through the 2013-14 season.

With perhaps the next Bruins captain sticking around for a while, which Boston athlete should get the next contract extension?

Randy Moss, obviously, will not be getting his, but his former teammate Wes Welker‘s deal runs out following the 2011 season. At just $2.15 million of base salary per year, No. 83 is one of the biggest steals in the NFL. Though the chances of him pulling a me-first, diva act in the final year of his contract like Moss are probably less than zero, the Patriots could reward the guy who rapidly recovered from torn knee ligaments to get back on the field with a nice contract extension.

Bergeron’s captain, Zdeno Chara, is another candidate for an extension, with his monster deal expiring at the conclusion of this season. He was paid $37.5 million over the past five seasons, averaging out to $7.5 million per year. He’ll be 34 years old in March, so he may not be in for such a lucrative contract, but Big Z is the cornerstone of the Bruins’ defense, and keeping him around could be essential to the future of the franchise.

Tuukka Rask could be another candidate for an extension. Though he is signed through this season and next, the B’s signed him as a backup goaltender, paying him just over $2 million for two seasons. As a rookie, Rask led the NHL in save percentage and goals-against average, so it may be in the B’s best interest to lock him up to a long-term deal.

Perhaps the most-publicized contract in Boston has been that of David Ortiz. The Red Sox have a one-year option for $12.5 million on the designated hitter, but Ortiz has said he’s looking for a longer extension. Whether that means two, three or even four years isn’t known, but Ortiz may not be happy with that one-year deal.
