The Jets reclaimed the top spot in the AFC East this past weekend. It looks like Braylon Edwards will be able to stick around to enjoy the ride.
Edwards was arrested for DUI on the morning of Sept. 21. After countless hours of speculation on how the troubled star should be handled, his case has been adjourned until January. This means he will not face any punishment from New York or the NFL this season.
Peter Frankel, Edwards' attorney, requested time to file written motions, which he claims is standard protocol.
"The schedule reflects what’s normally done in most criminal cases," Frankel said, according to NJ.com. "I can tell you without hesitation it’s not getting any special treatment."
The 27-year-old Jets receiver was arrested and charged with two misdemeanor counts of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle while impaired. When Edwards was pulled over in Manhattan he had a blood-alcohol content of .16 — twice the legal limit.
If found guilty of DUI, Edwards could be found in violation of probation and may face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Edwards, who was at the court this morning, did not address reporters. Frankel requested to have his client’s next court appearance on a Tuesday, so it would not affect his football schedule.
Dismissals of the charges, a plea deal, an acquittal or a conviction are all still possible outcomes.
But the potential jail time is not distracting Edwards from his football responsibilities.
"He's super focused on what he's doing," Frankel said, according to the website. "He's doing what he does. He's letting me do what I do."
Frankel said since Edwards' driver's license was suspended after his arrest, he has been using a driver to get around.
