Allegations involving Auburn quarterback Cam Newton took a sharp turn on Tuesday night.
According to ESPN.com, two Mississippi State recruiters have said that Newton and his father, Cecil, admitted in phone conversations that they were looking for a pay-for-play plan in Cam’s recruiting process.
The report also claims that Mississippi State officials reported the incident to the Southeastern Conference this past January.
One of the sources in the report claims that the father-and-son combination made it clear in a phone conversation that it was going to take “more than a scholarship” to land Cam Newton.
In the other phone conversation, Cam Newton spoke with Mississippi State and made it clear to them that he wished he could attend Mississippi State, but Cecil Newton insisted his son attend Auburn as they were offering more money. Cam Newton called allegedly called Mississippi State recruiters to notify of that himself.
Controversy has followed Newton everywhere he goes in the past week or so. Recruiting violations have been brought up and a FoxSports.com report surfaced on Monday alleging the quarterback of academic cheating on three separate occasions when he was at Florida.
On the field, Newton has been arguably the best player in the country. He is widely considered a Heisman Trophy candidate, a frontrunner according to many, and he plays on an Auburn team that is ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll as well as the BCS rankings.
