Donovan McNabb was benched in the final minutes of the game by his head coach the last time he took the field.
His next act has now proved to be signing five-year, $78 million extension with the Washington Redskins, Adam Schefter reports.
The deal includes $40 million guaranteed and could be worth up to $88 million with incentives. The quarterback — who may not be capable of learning Mike Shanahan's playbook or being physically fit enough for a two-minute drill — will now be a Redskin until 2016, the year of his 40th birthday.
The six-time Pro Bowler was traded by Philadelphia to division rival Washington after a decade with the team. McNabb is on pace for his lowest touchdown total since 1999, as he has thrown only seven scores to his eight interceptions in Washington. His numbers in 2009, however, were far better — a 92.9 quarterback rating and 22 touchdowns.
McNabb has also had his share of injury issues, having played only one full season since 2004.
The move comes as an extreme showing of confidence in the quarterback who had previously been presumed to be at odds with his coach. It, however, seems to be a rather risky investment in an aging quarterback with an injury history who has yet to excel on the field in a Redskins uniform.
