Report: Kyle Shanahan Broached Benching Donovan McNabb Month Ago, Shrank Playbook for Him

It's been pretty obvious that the details of the Donovan McNabb benching situation haven't fully been illuminated, but a little more was revealed on Sunday.

Kyle Shanahan, Redskins offensive coordinator and son of head coach Mike Shanahan, reportedly broached the idea of benching McNabb prior to last month's Eagles-Redskins game, according to Jay Glazer.

The notion that McNabb has been unable to learn the two-minute offense has been scoffed at as ridiculous, but it may be true. According to ProFootballTalk, the Redskins cut their playbook in half initially to cater to McNabb, but they are now having to operate with the "cliffnotes" version of even that.

With the bye week ahead, McNabb will have plentiful time to learn a few more plays, but his inability to do so thus far is puzzling — so puzzling, in fact, that it is worthy of legitimate pessimism as far as the McNabb-Shanahans relationship goes.

"This situation is irreconcilable," commented ESPN's Tom Jackson. If that is the case, the Redskins will have to brave the realities of a Rex Grossman era.
