In 2007, Chris Young was an All-Star for the San Diego Padres and one of the best pitchers in the National League. Since then, he’s been irrelevant.
Young went 9-8 with a 3.12 ERA in 173 innings in 2007, and led the league with just 6.1 hits per nine innings. The 6-foot-10 right-hander has suffered a myriad of injuries, however, and even underwent arthroscopic surgery in 2009 to repair partial tears in his right labrum (shoulder).
Despite his downfall, ESPN's Buster Olney reports the Mets are interested in Young, and could be closing in on a deal with the 31-year-old Princeton graduate. Meanwhile, sources tell Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan that Young's shoulder has "checked out well."
If the Mets indeed sign Young, he'll be competing to be New York's fifth starter, or possibly for a spot in the bullpen. Among his possible candidates would be 24-year-old Dillon Gee and wild lefty Oliver Perez.
