The Mets’ much-ballyhooed search for their next manager is finally over.
As first reported via Twitter by Ken Rosenthal, the Mets have settled on Terry Collins as their managerial choice. Collins has previous experience as an MLB manager, as he headed the Astros and Angels at various points in the 1990s. He has also coached in Japan, and worked in the Mets’ organization as their minor league field coordinator last season.
A Mets source confirmed the hiring on the team's website Sunday night.
Collins will replace Jerry Manuel, who, along with former general manager Omar Minaya, was relieved of his duties after the 2010 season ended. Sandy Alderson was hired to replace Minaya as the Mets’ GM.
Bob Melvin and Chip Hale were also viewed as finalists for the job, but have been eschewed in favor of Collins. High-profile names like Bobby Valentine, Don Wakamatsu and Clint Hurdle were linked to the Mets earlier this off season, as was Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale.
