The San Diego Padres folded toward the end of the 2010 season, but catcher Yorvit Torrealba had little to do with his team’s downfall.
Now, Torrealba, who hit .271 and played excellent defense in 95 games for the Padres last year, has signed on with the reigning AL champion Texas Rangers for a two-year, $6.25 million deal, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The 32-year-old backstop will take over for Bengie Molina, who was not offered arbitration by the Rangers and is likely to either retire or sign elsewhere. Torrealba is a 10-year veteran whose career highlight was being the starting catcher for the Colorado Rockies’ 2007 World Series squad.
