The Red Sox haven't been very active so far this offseason, but they have made a few small moves here and there, ones that might come back to help in the future.
Baseball America writer Matt Eddy reports the Red Sox have signed 27-year-old switch-hitter Drew Sutton, a long-time minor league infielder who has 118 major league plate appearances between the Reds and Indians.
Sutton's numbers in the big leagues aren't impressive — just a .222/.282/.333 line with three home runs.
But in the minors, Sutton has been a consistent hitter at every level. In 2010, between Louisville and Columbus (both Triple-A), Sutton posted a .379 on-base percentage. In 2008, he hit .317 with 20 homers and a .931 OPS for Double-A Corpus Christi.
Sutton, who was first drafted by the Houston Astros in the 15th round of the 2004 draft, can play second, third and shortstop.
