FOXBORO, Mass. — Tom Brady has been given a number of different nicknames from the Patriots’ fan base during the last decade.

But if Nike’s new design for the Patriots’ uniforms is legitimate, Brady might be known as Captain America as soon as 2012.

One thing is certain: Nike will take over the NFL’s licensing rights in 2012, and that means the uniforms will have to change in some fashion. Hey, they’ve got to sell jerseys, right?

But the linked sketch is only a rumor and might not actually be in the works. Here’s another sketched-up possibility.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick walked to the podium Friday morning as the media was poring over the designs, and he said he had yet to see them.

“Great,” Belichick said with an eager smile that was chock-full of sarcasm. “I can’t wait to see those.”

Belichick was told they resemble costumes, and he rebutted, “Wasn’t Halloween last month?”

Not just last month, Bill. The NFL’s new uniforms and Armageddon are now each scheduled for 2012.

Update, 1:57 p.m.: Nike did not design the jerseys.
