Saints defensive end Will Smith was arrested Saturday in Louisiana after a police officer witnessed him grabbing his wife by the hair.

According to police in Lafayette, Smith and his wife had gotten into an argument after leaving a nightclub around 2 a.m. Police patrolling the area observed the argument, which escalated into Smith grabbing his wife by her hair and dragging her down the street.

Police corporal Paul Mouton stated in a press release that the officers witnessed the incident. Mouton explained that the women’s injuries were minor.

Greg Bensil, director of media relations for the Saints, said in an e-mail that the team had been informed about the incident and have already spoken with Smith.

According to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Department, Smith was charged with domestic violence and simple battery and was released on $1,000 bond Saturday.

Smith was the Saints' first-round pick in 2004 and was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2006.
