LIVERPOOL, England — English soccer team Liverpool says Tom Werner will replace Martin Broughton as the club's chairman beginning next Wednesday.

Werner is also the chairman of New England Sports Ventures, which owns the Boston Red Sox and bought Liverpool for $480 million last month.

Broughton, who brokered the deal with NESV despite fierce opposition from the club's previous American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr., will step down from his interim position Tuesday in a move that had been widely expected.

Werner pledged Thursday "to work tirelessly for our supporters and deliver the best conditions for a winning team and silverware in the trophy room."

NESV chief John Henry, who owns the Red Sox with Werner, says it has been "a pleasure" working with Broughton.
