Fan Forum: Are the 1985 Chicago Bears the Best Team in NFL History? The 2007 Patriots may not have been able to record the first ever 19-0 season, but with 18 wins, they matched the 1984 San Francisco 49ers and 1985 Chicago Bears for the most ever in a single campaign.

In fact, while the 1972 Dolphins had an unblemished record, they are not often considered to be the best team ever. That honor, instead, is usually handed to those 18-win 1985 Bears.

Led by head coach Mike Ditka, linebacker Mike Singletary, running back Walter Payton and quarterback Jim McMahon, the Bears started out 12-0 before losing on Monday Night Football to the Dolphins. They completed the regular season 15-1 before outscoring their opponents 91-10 in the playoffs — including a 46-10 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XX.

Including the playoffs, the team allowed just 208 points — fewer than 11 per game.

Singletary won the Defensive Player of the Year award, while Ditka took home the Coach of the Year honor.
