KHL’s Avangard Ambushed by Vityaz in Brawl Seconds After Faceoff

The players of KHL-leading Avangard Omsk thought that they were showing up to a hockey game this past weekend. Just seconds after faceoff, they found out that they were actually going to a brawl.

Players on Vityaz ambushed their opponents the moment that the puck was dropped, likely because of unfinished business stemming from a similar brawl between the two teams in Moscow this past January. The fight featured just about everybody who was in the game at the time and left a few players down on the ice.

Avangard went on to win the game 3-2, but the team has called for harsh sanctions against Vityaz including exclusion from the KHL and bans for the team’s management.

Vityaz is known for its strategy of bringing over Canadian enforcers such as Josh Gratton, Darcy Verot, Chris Simon and Brandon Sugden — who make up the list of the top four most-penalized players in the KHL.
