The San Diego Padres had some work to do filling a few gaps in their infield, and they did so on Friday with two acquisitions at shortstop and second base.
According to the Associated Press, the Padres reacquired shortstop Jason Bartlett in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, and reportedly signed shortstop Orlando Hudson on Friday.
The Padres will receive another player in the trade with Bartlett, who has yet to be determined. The Rays receive relievers Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos, along with minor leaguers Brandon Gomes and Cole Figueroa in the trade.
Sources with knowledge of the situation revealed to the Associated Press that Hudson agreed to a two-year, $11.5 million contract with the Padres. The second baseman still needs to pass a physical before the official announcement is made.
Bartlett replaces Miguel Tejada at shortstop, who recently signed with the San Francisco Giants. Hudson will replace David Eckstein, who was granted free agency on Nov. 1.
Bartlett, who was named an All-Star during the 2009 season, batted .254 in 135 games last season with four home runs and 47 RBIs.
Hudson batted .268 last season with the Twins. The four-time Gold Glove Award winner and two-time All-Star picked up six home runs and 37 RBIs last year.
